MGF Water Leaks

MGF Water Leaks

Water Leaks

Our MGF is normally quite watertight even in very heavy rain but the frosty weather of winter brought about a new problem – condensation. Frost would form on the fabric of the hood, then melt, then freeze again and slowly permeate the fabric. When the heater was going full blast, condensation would occur and water would seep through the fabric. We decided that this problem presented us with a good opportunity to treat the hood with a quality re-proofing agent. We chose Renovo Ultra Proof to seal the hood and because of the inevitable bird soiling on the black fabric with also thought it best to clean the hood with Renovo pre-cleaner/shampoo. The Renovo range is extensive and there are different products for the different hood materials, so be sure to buy the correct type for the hood on your MG, if you are unsure seek advice.

Cleaning Up

Before you begin to apply the Renovo pre-cleaner/shampoo, brush the hood clean of any loose mud and bird deposits. Shake the aerosol vigorously and then apply the foam spray to a section of the hood at a time. Using a damp sponge carefully wipe off the foaming shampoo and watch the dirt come out into the sponge. We covered each area a number of times to ensure that all the shampoo had come out – along with the dirt.

Reproofing

We left the hood overnight in the garage to dry out thoroughly before re-proofing. Renovo Ultra Proof is brushed on and for the application we decided to use a brand new 2 inch high quality paint brush. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions on the Renovo tin. The proofing liquid is thin, paste-like and rather runny so it needs to be applied progressively. We worked on the hood, coating a separate section at a time by brushing the liquid into the fabric and paying particular attention to coat the hood seams. We were careful to avoid any spillage on the bodywork, windows or the rear screen and if any drops did stray we quickly wiped them off with a clean rag. After treatment we left the car overnight in a garage so that the hood could dry out thoroughly.

Has it worked?

Most noticeable was the ‘as new’ appearance of the hood after the shampoo and proofing. The real proof of Renovo’s effectiveness will come when the MGF next stands out in a severe frost. However, the first time the hood was exposed to water, the droplets sat on the surface in a similar way that they do on a newly polished metal panel. So far, it looks to be a first rate job; we will report back on the long term benefits. Renovo products are available from MGOC Accessories Tel: 01954 231318
