Just before this issue closed, the first details of the remodelled MG ZS range were announced, close on the heels of similar changes for the Rover 45. 2004 was initially pencilled in to be the launch date for the completely new 45 and ZS ranges, but circumstances already comprehensively aired, including the collapse of a key player contracted to work on the new car’s development, has seen the launch date for the completely new model slip into 2005. This created a need for the current ranges to be facelifted to keep them fresh and attractive.

The first thing to say is that the dynamics of the MG ZS range are not, nor have ever been in question. It is one of the most rewarding cars to drive in terms of chassis balance, handling and performance in its market sector. The model’s shortcomings stem mainly from the close resemblance to the Rover 45 and its predecessor, the Rover 400 range, not that these cars were bad to start with, just perceived as ‘old’.

When the ZS was announced in July 2001, the transformation from a Rover was considerable, but some disappointment was voiced over the similarity of a number of features from the Rover 400 range, especially the facia and switchgear. The reasonable response from the company was that within the time scales and budget constraints that applied they concentrated on the dynamic aspects, as these were most important. Now the new model ZS is able to address those shortcomings in quite a positive way.

Full technical details and additional photographs will be in a forthcoming issue but the available photograph of the new model ZS180 is described as striking, and that it certainly is. Clearly, the most significant visual changes are at the front and the new MG face is clearly present. Obvious styling elements from the MG SV are prominent with the front splitter extending into the pronounced wheel arch and side skirt extensions. Not so clear on this first image are the ‘Fender Vents’ (Shark Gills) behind the front wheel arches, another distinctive SV element. This bodykit is standard on the ZS180 and optional on all other ZS models.

There is also a family connection to the latest ZT with a similar lower air intake shape and proportion, plus of course, the new style better integrated grille and new headlamp design. At the rear is a new tailgate/boot and new rear bumper with the number plate said to have migrated from the recess in the boot/tailgate down into the new bumper. A new rear spoiler is common to all models.

One interesting technical snippet that has been released is the ZS180 has a wider track, that along with the new 11 spoke 17” alloy wheels ensures that those new arches are adequately filled. A wider track, would on paper, add to the handling benefits so it will be interesting to compare this new model’s characteristics with the outgoing model.

Inside there is a new modern style facia with rotary air vents rather than the previous oblong ones, and the centre facia is all new too with new switches. Changes continue with the adoption of new steering column stalks, seat fabrics (seats were effectively redesigned for MG applications in 2001) and door casing inserts, which will create a completely different interior atmosphere.

Equipment levels have been raised too and it’s worth mentioning a couple of them. Air conditioning becomes standard, but now having air temperature control (ATC) rather than the previous on/off set up. The lock/unlock ‘plip’ with the keys is new, and incorporates remote boot opening. Staying in the lock/security area, there is an automatic door locking facility that locks all doors when the car moves off from standstill. In addition, a master locking switch inside allows all locks to be activated when just sitting in a stationary car. Useful additions to security and peace of mind, but a sad reflection on society.

Retail prices announced show the new model range prices starting from £11,295 and reaching £17,300, and clearly at this stage, there is no information on this model appearing in the MG Privilege Purchase Scheme. The new ZS models will be displayed at the Motor Show Live at the NEC, Birmingham from May 27th along with the rest of the MG and Rover ranges and there promises to be much of interest at the Show for the MG enthusiast.
