Duxford Road Run

Misty fog covered the fens as the first of over 130 MGs arrived at the Club HQ in Swavesey for the 2008 Duxford Road Run, fortunately the sun came out and participants were able to set off in almost ideal open-top motoring conditions.

The shop was busy and quite a few members took advantage of the guided tours around the Club offices, MGOC spares store and MGOC workshops. Outside the new MG LE500 was on display which caused a great deal of interest and comment. While the specification and finish of the new MG was much admired there were strong views about the Vibrant Orange paint colour which was either loved or hated.

After setting off all went well on the run until the route was disrupted by a last minute mid-morning road closure at Thaxted. This is the kind of eventuality that every route planner dreads as the route had been checked previously, however MG drivers are not easily daunted, after maps were consulted the road runners found their way back to Saffron Walden and rejoined the planned route.

Arriving at Duxford the MGs had their own parking area and everyone was free to explore the hangers and displays, or just sit back with a picnic and watch all the various historic aircraft taking off and landing.

Despite the problems with the route participants were pleased with their day and very positive about the run and the final destination.

A charity raffle to raise funds in support of the local surgery was held and the prizewinners were Ken and Ann Matthews, Anthony and Christine Brown, Peter Smith, David Charlton, Kevan Horrocks, Derek Haynes and David Dykes.
