RECORD BREAKERS

IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

Having broken seven motor racing records before his world land Speed record attempt, L.G.Hornsted set a new World Land Speed Record over the flying mile at Brooklands in his 200hp Benz.

In 1922 Kenelm Lee Guiness took a 350hp Sunbeam to Brooklands and achieved 133.708 mph over the measured mile. The first of Sunbeams’ five World Land Speed Records.

Major Henry Seagrave with the Napier Lion aero engined “Golden Arrow” set the record of 231.567 mph at Daytona Beach on 11th March 1929. The only run for Golden Arrow, as Seagrave turned his attention to the World Water Speed Record.

Ray Keech achieved 207.553 mph driving the White Triplex Special “Spirit of Elkdom”. Thirty -six cylinders and 81 litres capacity supplied by three Liberty aircraft engines. Two engines exposed behind the driver and a third in front, but still driving the rear wheels.

Maj. Henry Seagrave

When Charles C. Wakefield set up his company in 1899 he started Castrol on course to smooth the way for hundreds of world champions and a fist-full of land, air and water speed records. Among the most widely acclaimed Land Speed record breakers who relied on Castrol lubricants were Sir Malcolm Campbell and Sir Henry Seagrave, whose performances with their Bluebird and Golden Arrow cars captivated the public.

Ernest Eldridge driving a massive 21.7 litre Fiat “Mephistopheles” achieved 145.896 mph. This was the last Land Speed Record record to be set on a road or a track, drivers needing to use the large open straights on beaches or salt flats to achieve higher speeds.

Capt. Malcolm Campbell set a fist-full of Land Speed Records culminating at Bonneville Salt Flats where he achieved 301.129 mph in “Bluebird”. Having set a total of nine records he moved to a new challenge – the World Water Speed Record.

Richard Noble after ten years of preparation brought the record back to Britain for the first time in twenty-one years. Thrust 2 at Black Rock achieved a mean average speed of 633.388 mph – a new record.

With a modified “Thunderbolt” and George Eyston at the wheel, the World Land Speed Record was broken with 357.497 mph at Utah Salt Flats 16th September 1938

The first super-sonic car “Thrust SSC” driven by Andy Green , an RAF Tornado pilot set the first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record of 763.035 at Black Rock Nevada. The first time in history on 13th October 1997 that the speed of sound was exceeded on land.
