MGs return to Glorious Goodwood
We as MG owners dream of taking our precious cars to a place where we can safely exceed the limits of modern public roads. Luckily, this opportunity came for a second year back in February with the aid of 1006 Chichester MGOC and their chairman Andy Harris. The Goodwood Motor Circuit, home to the now famous Goodwood Revival, would once again be the venue. Since we were here last year this truly unique racing circuit had been freshly resurfaced giving more grip and a smoother drive. However, one downside of this was that the more experienced drivers attending found that their favourite corner turn in markers were lost forever. The event consisted of either a morning or afternoon session for a very reasonable cost of £93 – very good value when compared to other track days offered elsewhere. Of course before being allowed on to the track every driver was briefed on the very necessary safety rules and the best ways to tackle the circuit. But the main point the organizers made was to go out and enjoy yourself.

With the driver briefing completed all cars had to pass a stringent exhaust noise level test to keep the local residents living near to the Goodwood circuit happy. After this all drivers and their passengers were kitted out with FIA approved racing helmets before being allowed to leave the pit lane for a ten minute blast of the circuit. Experienced local instructors were on hand to help drivers enjoy the best and safest way around the track. If any one like me was looking out for Anthony Reid (former MG ZS UK Touring Car driver) who was due to be on hand as an instructor, unfortunately he had to cancel at the last minute due to a racing commitment in South Africa coming up. I’m sure he would have had a better day with us.
The day started cold and grey, but as the action started things soon warmed up. Having attended the track day last year, I can definitely say that this year was even better attended and I’m sure that once the news spreads of what a great day this really is then it will continue to grow. Greater attendance this year was highlighted by the first parade lap, held at the end of the morning session. Estimates had suggested a maximum of 25 cars, but it turned out to consist of just over 40 MGs much to the marshal’s astonishment.

One of the highlights of this first parade lap was the presence of a lovely early 1930s MG J3 which combined with the more modern MG As, Bs, Fs, TFs, ZRs, ZSs, ZTs and SVs to gave a neat timeline of many of the cars MG has made. Approximately £140 was raised for the local St Joseph’s night shelter fund from parade lap entry fees.
It was a shame that 94 year old Bob Jenkins (a lifelong MG owner) who was due to lead the parade lap couldn’t make it; maybe next year Bob? It was nice to see more of the elegant MGAs this year as well as two of the ultimate MG XPower SV muscle cars owned by Adrian Oates and Brian Payne. During the afternoon a group of TVRs arrived at the circuit for a look see, and were certainly given something to think about when they saw the two SVs in action. We also enjoyed sight and sound of a single seat MG-powered Elva formula car owned by 1006’s Ken Aylett.

The organisation by Andy and his helpers was once again first class, and it is worth mentioning that poor old Andy didn’t even get a chance to go around the track in his own MGF as he was so busy making sure the day ran smoothly. The work of all the Goodwood Motor Circuit staff must also be praised as it was so professional. Finally, I think that the day’s success could be measured by the big smiles from all the participants, and the many spectators who attended and enjoyed the day. Thanks again Andy and all 1006 for creating such an enjoyable day. Roll on 2007.
